Renowned as the notorious collectors and opportunistic thieves of the animal kingdom, Magpies lend their name to the human condition for an irrational affinity for shiny objects, dubbed Magpie Syndrome. The Magpie font is an eclectic assembly of alphabetical forms leftover after decluttering episodes on neighborhood sidewalks, construction sites, and junkyards. The human propensity for collecting traces back some 12,000 years, coinciding with the transition from nomadic to settled lifestyles. This compulsion to collect is not merely an act of accumulation but a testament to our capacity to find personal value and significance in the ownership of material objects. In honoring the aged and worn, we engage in reflection on our relationship with material possessions, challenging the relentless pursuit of novelty. Many of these artifacts have lost their ability to function as originally intended, however, Magpie invites its audience to reconsider the beauty and potential inherent in the loose parts that clutter our urban landscapes.
